For two days, Sadie Warner sat beside Cullen Travers' bed and watched as he mumbled incoherently and soaked the sheets in sweat. Juniper laid on the floor between them, whimpering in tandem with the old gunslinger's moans. Sadie had managed to drag him into the mining town of Mabie, and with the assistance of a young boy named Avery from the local general store, was able to get him into the store's backroom. The owner of the store, George Cavil, let them stay on the condition that the young woman help him in the shop. There had been a bit of an upset over the wolf coming inside, which was understandable, as the beast made it known she wanted none of the strangers close to her. Sadie had insisted, despite the pup's low growls, that she was harmless, and so George relented.
The local doctor, a small woman not much older than Sadie, had come over and inspected the old gunslinger. Sadie had been surprised that a woman so young could be considered a doctor, especially with her being a woman. Sadie's ma was decent with cleaning up the small wounds that she and her brothers sustained on the farm, but anything more serious and old man, Dr. Campbell would ride out. She assumed the woman was the best the town could muster. Unfortunately, the young doctor couldn't deduce Cullen's precise condition.
âOne helluva nasty cold, I'd say.â The doctor said as she gave Sadie a bottle of dark, bitter medicine. âGive him this three times a day, should help with the fever. I reckon ye better have him drink a lot of water and eat something too, he's going to need his strength if he's planning on beatin this thing. You'll know within a day or two how this'll turn out.â
So for two days, that's what she did, paid back the hospitality of Mr. Cavil by helping Avery around the shop, while forcing medicine down the old gunslinger's gullet, along with water and bits of food. There were times she simply waited at Cullen's bedside, praying and hoping he would pull through as she practiced handling her Colt and cleaned their firearms. There were times she could feel the heat emanating from his flesh and hear him weeping as he mumbled. She'd heard a person could be haunted by visions with some fevers, and she felt certain that this was the case for the old gunslinger.
On the morning of the third day in Mabie, Sadie could feel Cullen's fever break. He'd stopped sweating and appeared to be resting more peacefully. Juniper too seemed more lively and licked at his face. After a time, he opened his eyes and appeared coherent.
âHow ye feelin?â Sadie asked quietly with a gentle smile.
âI ain't dead yet?â Cullen muttered, his voice raspy.
âAfraid not, ye still got some unfinished business here.â Taking a cool, damp cloth, Sadie patted his face and placed it on his forehead.
âYes ma'am, got some Ghosts to kill, and...â his voice trailed off.
âAnd what?â Sadie asked, tucking a lock of her black hair behind her ear.
